Vitamin B6 Toxicity on the Rise

With all of the over-the-counter supplements to choose from and many health practitioners advocating their usage, how do you know that your health practitioner or doctor isn’t putting you in danger?

Vitamin B6 Toxicity is an increasing problem that many health practitioners and doctors are ignoring, or even worse, aren’t aware of. It can cause intense anxiety, gastrointestinal upset, and neurological problems such as shocks, tingling, and twitching. Many have symptoms of neuropathy. Unfortunately, the vitamin’s toxic effects are different for everyone and may be misdiagnosed as another disorder leaving the patient to continue worsening as they continue to ingest their daily vitamins in hopes of improvement.

The United States has set an upper tolerable limit of 100 mg per day and considers anything at or under this amount as safe, yet a simple google search will show otherwise. In addition, many medical studies have published that toxicity levels only occur at very high supplementation amounts such as 500 mg-1000 mg and that the effects of toxicity will simply subside once the person has stopped taking it. These assumptions are completely incorrect.

Due to these misconceptions, many healthy individuals are becoming toxic on their supplements in their quest for a healthy lifestyle, some have permanent and devastating life-long complications to deal with. Fortunately, if the toxicity is found quickly enough, the patient may improve significantly. This is why testing for Vitamin B6 toxicity when a patient presents with neurological issues or other unexplained symptoms is so important.

According to Dr. Brandt R. Gibson, Podiatrist at Mountain West Foot and Ankle Institute ,

“It is our recommendation, therefore, that if supplementation has been done and neuropathy has occurred in close proximity to taking a high quality vitamin, Vitamin B6 levels should be tested. High levels would confirm this as a possible cause and allow removal of supplementation and improvement of neuropathy over a several year period.”

If you have been having symptoms of neuropathy, such as tingling, numbness, twitching in muscles, electrical shocks, or any other sudden health issue that involves the nervous system, request that your doctor pull a Vitamin B6 level to see if you may suffer from Vitamin B6 toxicity.
